Red Falls used to be a highly trafficked swimming area for people. It was known as a swimming hole. In recent years with the enforcement of very restrictive parking and no trespassing signs Red Falls hosts far less people. It is located along Route 23 on the Batavia Kill nearby to the town center of Prattsville. This area of Route 23 received a major washout because of Hurricane Irene and required extensive road work and construction.
The photos below show Red Falls and the Batavia Kill at heavy flow. It does not look inviting to swim in this area on this day. One can get a grasp of scale by comparing where the former rock abutment is in the heavy flow photo (upper right third of image) to where the young teenager jumps off from it in 2005.
